Itinerary

May 20 – Arrive to Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru. Meet your Village Experience Representative and transfer to hotel for the day.

May 21 – Meet our guide in the hotel lobby in the morning and embark on a tour of Lima including stops at the archeological site of Huaca Pucllana, the UNESCO World Heritage historical center, the artistic neighborhood of Barranco, and the Larco Museum. Return to hotel in the afternoon. (B,L)

May 22 – Morning transfer to airport for flight to Trujillo – known as the “City of Eternal Spring.” Upon arrival, visit the Plaza de Armas, the colonial architecture of the main square, Trujillo Cathedral, and Casa Urquiaga. After a traditional lunch of Northern Peruvian food, we’ll learn about the ancient Moche Civilization with visits to Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol and the Interpretation Center. Visit the Manos Mocheras Artisan Center before checking into hotel for the evening. (B,L)

May 23 – Morning visit to the Chimu ceremonial center of Huaca Arco Iris – also known as the Dragon Temple. Continue on to one of the most impressive sites in Northern Peru – the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chan Chan. This is the largest adobe city in the Americas! Visit the Nik A Palace, ceremonial plazas, intricate friezes and more. Lunch will be seaside in the fishing village of Huanchaco. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on a traditional caballito de totora (used for more than 2,000 years!), enjoy the boardwalk, and shop the artisan stores. Return to hotel in the afternoon. (B,L)

May 24 – This morning, we drive North to Chiclayo. Enroute, we’ll visit the El Brujo Archeological Complex – one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Moche Civilization. Explore its pyramids, murals and more. Continue on to the Cao Museum – home of the Lady of Cao – one of the most significant discoveries in South America. Her remains and funerary offerings provide incredible evidence of the power of female rulers in ancient Peru. We’ll visit the town of Magdalena de Lao before heading to lunch in Pacasmayo. Check into hotel upon arrival to Chiclayo. (B,L)

May 25 – Begin the morning by visiting Huaca Rajada – the archaeological site where the tomb of the Lord of Sipan was discovered. Continue on to the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum – internationally recognized as one of Peru’s best museums. The artifacts on display tell the story of the wealth of the former Moche Empire. After lunch, we’ll visit the Pyramids of Tucume – these adobe pyramids were built by successive pre- Inca societies and help explain the region’s ancient religious, political and cultural history. Return to hotel in the evening. (B,L)

May 26 – After breakfast, transfer to airport in Chiclayo for flight through Lima to Cusco. Travel to the Sacred Valley upon arrival. Relax and enjoy the afternoon. (B)

May 27 – Morning visit to one of the best preserved living Inca towns – Ollantaytambo. Enjoy a walking tour of the historic center, the archeological fortress and the terraces. Lunch and a local textile demonstration will be in Awanacancha. In the afternoon, visit the archeological site of Pisac- known for its agricultural terraces, ceremonial sites, and incredible views of the Sacred Valley. Return to hotel in the evening. (B,L)

May 28 – Today is the day. Machu Picchu awaits! Board train to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Then, continue by bus to the entrance. Enjoy a guided visit to this stunning Inca citadel. Explore its stone structures, agricultural terraces, ceremonial sites, and many gorgeous viewpoints. Then, take the scenic Peru Rail Vistadome Observatory train back to the Sacred Valley through the Andes Mountains. Return to hotel in the late afternoon. (B,L)

May 29 – Spend the morning with the women of the Chawaytire Community. Learn about cultivating native potatoes, preparation using ancestral techniques, and a delicious farm to table lunch with the women. This will be a beautiful way to immerse into the community and support their responsible tourism program. After lunch, drive to Cusco and check into hotel. Free evening to explore. (B,L)

May 30 – Walking tour of the historical sites of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Cusco…paired with a culinary tour of Andean cuisine. Visit local markets, try over 14 traditional dishes, stroll through the Plaza de Armas, and take in the beauty of this colonial city. Free afternoon to continue exploring, shopping or sipping coffee. May 31 – Transfer to airport for flight to Lima. End of Main Trip. If you are continuing on to Easter Island for the extension trip, transfer to airport for flight to Santiago, Chile. (B)

Itinerary

May 31 – Arrive to Santiago, Chile. Check into airport hotel to rest and reset before another adventure. (B)

June 1 – Catch the morning flight to Rapa Nui on Easter Island. Upon arrival, meet local guide and check into hotel. Enjoy lunch. Then, spend the afternoon exploring three archeological sites. First, we’ll visit Ahu Huri a Urenga – this is a ceremonial platform for astronomical observations that feature Moai with four hands (very unique). Then, we’ll head to Ahu Hanga Poukura – an inland ceremonial site that helps explain ancient community organization. And lastly, we’ll explore Ahu Valhu – a coastal ceremonial site where fallen, unrestored Moai show us evidence of internal conflict and cultural change. Return to hotel in the evening. (B,L)

June 2 – Today, we visit the island’s most iconic sites. We’ll start at Ahu Akahanga – the burial site of the island’s first King. Then, we’re off to Rano Raraku – the famous quarry where more than 400 Moai were carved. Next, we visit Ahu Tongariki – this houses the island’s largest restored ceremonial platform. Stop for lunch. We’ll then head to Te Pito Kura – known as “the navel of the world” and home to the largest Moai ever transported. We’ll end the day at Anakena Beach – where Rapa Nui culture is believed to have started. Return to hotel in the evening. (B,L)

June 3 – This morning will have us learn all about the Legend of the Birdman. We start at Orongo – the ancient ceremonial village where the cult of Make-Make and the Tangata Manu (Birdman) competition took place. Next, we head to the crater of Rano Kau – the largest and deepest volcanic crater on the island. We then go to Vinapu – a ceremonial platform known for its stone masonry and the architectural skills of the people of Rapa Nui. Stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we will explore the West Coast and the final stages of this megalithic culture by visiting Hanga Kio’e, Ahu Ko Te Riku, Ahu Tahai, and Ahu Vai Uri. We’ll end this day at the Tahai ceremonial complex to watch sunset from this incredible spot. Return to hotel in the evening. (B,L)

June 4 – After breakfast, transfer to hotel for flight to Santiago. Check into airport hotel for the evening. (B)

June 5 – Transfer to airport for flights back home. (B)
