Shela Women’s Association

The Shela Women’s Association is a group of women living in Shela Village in the Lamu Archipelago. These women specialize in cooking Swahili food and passing along recipes that are generations old.
Jamila, Swabra, Amina, Aisha, Nurman, Maryam, Kathur, Khadija, and Maryam Bakari work together to uplift and empower each other every day by cooking together, sharing stories, and hosting events. The women are often hired to cater weddings, parties, community events, and conferences. They also supply many of the local restaurants and cafes with Swahili snacks.
 
As part of The Village Experience’s socially responsible tourism program, our network of donors helped to launch two new offerings from the women:



SAMOSA MAKING CLASS

- a one hour samosa class making class in one of the women’s homes followed by a full Swahili lunch or dinner. Cost is $40 per person
