Mbita, Kenya
Summary
Some of our favorite women in the world live in Mbita, Kenya and spearhead our initiatives in the community including youth education, small business development, clean water, housing, and healthcare.
Social Justice Education
The community in Mbita suffers from a high percentage of HIV/AIDs, malaria, typhoid, and poor overall access to healthcare. Our school was built to provide education to HIV/AIDs orphans, our gardens were started to provide healthy, nutritious food to the women and their families, and our businesses were launched to provide an income. This group faces an uphill battle everyday to simply put food on the table. We are dedicated to working with the community to improve the overall standard of living.
Past Accomplishments
Working one-on-one with our friends in Mbita, we have built a primary school complete with classrooms, administrative building, dining hall, and playground. Our school is so impressive it just became a testing site for the region!
Our community center is the home base for the Live Long Ladies - 55 women widowed from the effects of HIV/AIDS. These women are the pillars of the community and help run the school and feeding program. Over the years, these women have received new homes, latrines, clean water filters, rain catchment systems, mosquito nets, beds/mattresses, solar panels, gardening supplies, gas cooking canisters and more.
Our small business program is thriving and consists of a motorbike taxi company, organic gardens, party rental/catering company, soap making, tailoring project, and much more.
Current Project Needs
The Primary School incurs annual expenses related to teacher’s salaries and continuing education, building maintenance, student uniforms/backpack/shoes, textbooks, field trips, and healthcare clinics. They also have a new sports program and hope to be able to compete in competitions country wide.
The Community Center and Small Business Program depend on our generosity to take the necessary steps forward in their income-generating projects – everything from computer repairs and software updates to new cooking supplies and expansion of the tailoring program.
We love to be a steady and reliable resource for the Live Long Ladies …as they come up with new income generating projects, we step in to make these dreams a reality.
