Lamu, Kenya
The Village Experience has been working with Maskani Youth Initiative in the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya since it’s inception in 2018. This is a local program led by the Youth of Shela Village and Lamu Town focused on giving young people in the area a space to call their own. Weekly workshops take place to connect Youth to employment, education, and volunteer opportunities. Seminars on relevant topics take place in the space - everything from protecting the environment and women’s rights to starting your own business and learning social media.
What we love is that there is an income-generating element to this initiative. Artisan products made by local groups are proudly displayed and given a market. A cafe occupies part of the space serving local Swahili snacks, coffee/tea, and smoothies. These two programs will help keep the doors open.
Social Justice Education
Youth in Lamu County and the Lamu Archipelago have a lot to say, but not many outlets through which to express their concerns and explore their curiosities. Empowering Youth to begin their own programs, create their own workshops, and run their own space is a fantastic way to let them lead. We love that the leadership of Maskani Youth Initiative has chosen to tackle the problem of jiggers in Mararani. They are actively raising money and volunteering their time to spray houses, conduct cleanings, provide shoes, and educate households on how to stop this problem. Empowering Youth works!
Past Accomplishments
The Village Experience has provided funding for the creation and rent of the Maskani Youth Cafe space. We have provided a new refrigerator, french presses, cutlery, plates/bowls/glasses, placemats, and more to get the space up and running. We have consulted on the design and set up of the space and meet on a monthly basis with the team to guide them in the right direction to achieve their mission. We will bring all of our Village Experience groups and clients to the cafe as a means of supporting this wonderful initiative on the island.
