Located at the tip of Northern Africa, and situated between Algeria and Libya, Tunisia boasts incredible scenery, history and ruins dating back to the B.C era.
When you look at a map, you will notice Tunisia’s close proximity to Italy, only slightly separated by the Mediterranean Sea. This proximity has afforded Tunisia an interesting mix of Islamic and Roman cultural influences, a truly unique combination.
Archeologically, Tunisia is full of history. The ancient city of Carthage was amongst the world’s most prosperous cities for its strategic location for sea trading and fertile soil for crops. Explore the ruins found here from the Punic, Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine eras. Head to The Bardo Museum for an extensive collection of mosaics – the largest in the world! Make sure to visit El Djem’s spectacular Coliseum – rivaled only by Rome’s Coliseum. And a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Kairouan to see the beloved Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Medina, and the carpet weavers is a must.
Visit the capital city of Tunis and stay in luxury riads inside the Medina walls, people watch from quaint cafes, explore the exotic spice markets, and get lost in the winding alleyways. Spend a day in the colorful town of Sidi Bou Said overlooking the Mediterranean. It’s cobblestoned streets, artisan galleries, and blue and white houses make it a must stop on any itinerary. Lounge on the beaches of Hammamet. But, most importantly, explore the incredible Roman ruins dotted throughout the country. Tunisia has so much to offer the curious traveler ready to explore!
ITINERARY
Day 1 – Arrive to the Tunis-Carthage International Airport. Meet your Village Experience representative and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2 – Meet your guide in the morning, and stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage Tunis Medina with stops at the Zitouna Mosque, spice market, Bab el Bahr Se Gate, Olive Tree Mosque, and more. Stop for a traditional lunch and then enjoy some free time in the evening. (B,L)
Day 3 – Morning tour of the Souks of Tunis to learn about local handicrafts and specialties such as perfume, shoemaking, local fez, leather work and more. Free afternoon to schedule a hammam appointment. (B)
Day 4 – Today, you will check out of your hotel and head South to visit the ancient Roman Ruins at Dougga and Maktar. Dougga is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the best preserved Roman small town in North Africa. At Maktar, you’ll see a Trajan Forum, large baths, Roman militia club, and more dating back to 112 AD. This site also houses megalithic tombs! Drive to Kairouan – an important Islamic City. Check into Kasbah style hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,D)
Day 5 – This morning, you will visit the grand mosque of Okba Ibn Nafaa established in 670 AD. Make stops at the Mausoleum of the Berber companion of Mohamed and the Aghlabid Pool. After this, wander the ancient medina and get lost in the winding alleyways and find a nice place for lunch. In the afternoon, depart for the archeological site of Sbeitla. Here you’ll see numerous ancient churches, baptism sites, temples, baths, and the Arch of Diocletian. (B)
Day 6 – In the morning, depart for El Djem – the ancient Roman Coliseum dating back to 230 AD. This is known as one of the best preserved Roman Coliseums in the world. In the afternoon, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Medina of Sousse. You’ll make stops at the Ribat and the Archeological Museum at the Kasbah. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,D)
Day 7 – Morning drive to the Medina of Hammamet. Stop for a relaxing lunch and coffee and wander through the narrow alleyways. Check into beach hotel on Hammamet Beach. (B,L)
Day 8 – Free day to enjoy the beach, the pool, or the spa. (B)
Day 9 – In the morning, you’ll travel to the ruins of Carthage. Here you’ll find ruins from the Punic, Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine era. Then, explore the world famous Le Bardo Museum (pending reopening). This museum houses the largest collections of ancient mosaics in the world. Some say only the Egyptian Museum can rival it in terms of richness of historical collections. Check into hotel in the blue and white city – Sidi Bou Said. (B)
Day 10 – Free day to enjoy walking around Sidi Bou Said or relax at the hotel. This is a great time to pick up some last minute souvenirs as well. (B)
Day 11 – Transfers to the airport throughout the day. (B)
